New Chess Boards for Harold Kelley Plaza 7/16/2008

Soon there will be chess boards in Harold Kelley Plaza. The Hollywood Neighborhood Association was able to secure funds from the city sponsored 2008 Neighborhood Association Project Funds.

Chess boards will be retro-fitted on top of both of the existing outdoor tables currently installed in the plaza. The goal is to draw more of our community together to participate in a fun and educational activity.

We hope to have the boards installed sometime in August, however, at this time we do not have a definite installation date available.

Hooray for Hollywood is a large street party in the Hollywood District commemorating the opening of the Hollywood Theatre 82 years ago on July 17, 1926. The celebration will close Sandy Boulevard between NE 40th and NE 42nd Ave from 7:00-11:00 p.m. and includes live performances, expertly prepared barbeque, birthday cake, a beer garden and outdoor projection on the side of the Theatre.

Providence Construction at the Halsey (Davis) Business Center 7/16/2008

From Providence Press Release:

"Beginning next week, you will see the first signs of the demolition of the old Halsey (Davis) Business Center as we prepare for Providence’s construction of a new office building on this site."

"We want to let you know about the changes you can expect:

  • On Monday, July 14th, fencing will begin to go up around the property, extending from 43rd and Halsey to 44th and around the old parking lot behind the Halsey property.
  • On Thursday, July 17th, the sidewalk on the south side of Halsey between 43rd and 44th – directly in front of the old Halsey building – will be closed. This means that people walking along Halsey in that area will need to cross to the north side of the street.
  • A temporary crosswalk will be in place, and flaggers will also be on site to help people cross there during peak traffic times (6 a.m. – 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. – 7 p.m.).
  • Construction is allowed on the site between the hours of 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., Monday through Saturday. Outside those hours, work is only permissible on an emergency basis or with a noise variance permit.
  • If you have questions about construction noise, please contact the city of Portland’s noise control office at 503-823-7350.
  • General questions about the Providence construction project can be answered by calling 503-215-6282. We expect the demolition process will be completed this fall. At that point, construction will then begin, and we now expect the new building will be completed by the end of 2010."
