| Providence Plans Development in Hollywood District | 01/31/2008 |
| Providence Medical Center has purchased the Davis/Halsey Business Center (NE Halsey x 43rd) with plans to develop the property. Issues of concern could be traffic and street parking in an area that has seen a lot of development and increase in traffic in recent years. Providence representatives came to the January HNA General Meeting to
speak about the project. They were able to field and answer a lot of
questions. Parking and traffic remained the largest concerns the
audience. Building aesthetics were also a concern especially for residents
adjacent and near to the property. The potential for increased traffic
along NE 45th is also a concern. Providence's traffic engineer gave the
HNA a copy of the traffic report study they compiled. |

| Hollywood Neighborhood Emergency Team | 01/31/2008 |
The Hollywood Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET) is a small group of our neighbors who have volunteered to keep thinking about and being prepared to help the Hollywood Neighborhood area in the event of a large emergency. A large emergency might be a big earthquake that damages homes in a large area and [affects] the urban utility and fire prevention systems in many parts of Portland. NET Volunteers receive 25 hours of training over eight weeks provided by the Fire Bureau at their training center near NE 122nd and Sandy Blvd. This free basic training is three hours a week. The basic training gives you the skills to work with your neighbors to save lives and property during the first 72 hours of any citywide emergency, the period when many neighborhoods will be on their own. The skills taught for NET training will enable you to manage emergencies you may encounter in daily life, and the organizational structure developed in each neighborhood will enable the Neighborhood Emergency Team to communicate with their local fire station about the impacts on the neighborhood and the needs of the neighborhood during a large scale or city-wide emergency. The brief titles of each NET class are: Disaster Preparedness, Fire/HAZMAT/Utilities, Disaster Medicine I, Disaster Medicine II, Search & Rescue I, Search & Rescue II, Disaster Psychology and Team Operations, and Final Exercise. People interested in signing up for the next training can do so at the web site: www.pdxprepared.net NET Team volunteers receive opportunities for ongoing training and also help distribute emergency preparedness information like “Together We Prepare Oregon,” a booklet prepared and printed by the Red Cross and “High Rise Fire Safety,” a flyer prepared by the Portland Bureau of Fire, Rescue and Emergency Services. The local Hollywood NET Team contact person, Ian Timm, can be reached at <istimm@pacifier.com>. He is also willing to talk to Hollywood area house parties about household emergency preparedness. |
